The kitchen has traditionally been the hub of the home, the centre of family life where family members gather to prepare simple every day meals, to marking milestones in our lives by preparing celebratory dinners for loved ones, birthdays, anniversaries, successes and disappointments.
Food is not only a form of sustenance and a daily requirement it is truly one of life's great pleasures.
Many of us love everything from purchasing the perfect ingredients, to creating the dish and the way its served on counter and finally enjoying dinner with friends and family.
What I am noticing with new kitchen designs is the integration of the more formal living areas with open plan dining cooking and living spaces which is lovely to see.
Many older homes have kitchens that are closed of enclosed areas merely for the preparation of food. Most updated kitchens are now more open and provide comfortable practical living space that integrates seamlessly with other areas of the home. A current popular trend is the commercial restaurant style kitchen with heavy bold stainless steel refrigerators and stoves with gleaming granite work surfaces, no doubt a spin off from the endless celebrity chef's we see on TV.
